Papers relating to overseas trips to Papua New Guinea

Kath Walker was invited to Papua New Guinea in 1973 and 1976.

In 1973 she was invited to attend the Third Nuigini Arts Festival with the Yirrkala Aboriginal dancers. She presented poetry readings and spoke about Aboriginal literature. Included is correspondence, itineraries, and programmes relating to her attendance at this Festival.

At the First Independent Papua New Guinea Writers' Conference, held between July 1 and 4, 1976 at Port Morseby, she presented a keynote address. A copy of her speech is included as well as programmes, workshop information and schedules, an invitation, an information sheet and a writers survey form (not filled in). A book which was given to her is included with this PNG material and is inscribed by the author to Kath: Liyong, Taban Lo (1976). Myth language and literature. 2. Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters

Correspondence, reports, ephemera, and articles have been collected around the areas of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters: culture and cultural events; education; politics; rights; welfare; and SEMP (Social Education Materials Project).

Material connected to Shadow sister [motion pitcture]

This file includes letters, flyers, media releases, story outline for film, reservation forms to 'attend the screening of the film and meet Kath Walker' and newspaper cuttings relating to the film Shadow Sister. Shadow Sister : a film biography of Aboriginal Poet Kath Walker, M.B.E. was produced and directed by Frank Heinmans of Cinetel Productions. The film premiered at the Sydney Opera House in November 1977 to 6000 people, mostly school children.

Documents that relate to Denis Walker: Petition to Kath Walker to support the release of Denis Walker on bail; 'Letter to U.S.A.' by Denis B. Walker, 27 Jan 1982; letter regarding the 4th Sofia International writers meeting by Denis B. Walker, 19 Aug 1982; and article by Denis Walker titled 'The White Australian Psych'.
Documents relating to Vivian Walker: play script 'Urinchitta (Spark of fire)' by Vivian Walker (12 leaves); and 'Oodgeroo' by Vivian Walker (22 leaves). Also included in this file is a petition and forms requesting birth and marriage certificates by Vivian Walker from 17 Aug 1984.

'Stories from Australia' (Stradbroke Dreamtime)

Bound typescript draft (70 leaves ; 30 cm) with annotations, layout notes and edits of 'Stories from Australia' (Stradbroke dreamtime), published in 1971 by Angus and Robertson in folder with title on cover: 'Kath Walker MS.' Included in folder are 25 line drawings by Dennis Schapel for the book.

'Unpublished playscripts and stories'

The original folder had two titles 'Unpublished playscripts and stories'. Some scripts have multiple copies, some have drafts, and some have annotations. It contains the following scripts: 'Bora. Initiation' (3 drafts), 'Civilised savages: one act play', 'Old Mick' (3 drafts, one incomplete), 'Playabout corroboree', 'Tail of platypus' (3 drafts), 'Tea party. Review.' (2 drafts), and 'You can't trust no one no how'. The last item is a photocopied typescript (8 leaves) with 'Tape excerpt (verbatim)' written across the top of every page. The 'interviewee' is an Australian Aboriginal giving a commentary on the 'Police' ; 'What is an Aboriginal?'; and 'Discrimination'.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are warned that this resource mentions cultural ceremony and Bora initiation. It may contain images, transcripts or names of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples now deceased. It may also contain historically and culturally sensitive words, terms, and descriptions.

Play, radio and film scripts

This folder contains:
2 play scripts. -- 'Manhunt' (handwritten in a notebook, dated 1968) and 'The play that never was' (cover title), 'Patience required for the problemental pass' (title on contents page) (stapled typescript booklet);
1 script for a radio program titled 'An Aboriginal Legend' which was part of the Australian Broadcasting Commission (Queensland Branch) series 'Grade 3 Social Studies' aired on 6 Apr 1973;
1 script for a film broadcast of 'Stradbroke dreamtime' starring Kath Walker, produced by Val Hartigan - includes a shooting schedule, timings and footage estimates (13 leaves; handwritten annotations);
1 [radio] script titled 'Kath Walker : Story teller' (which includes the story 'Biami and Bunyip);
