Administrative history

The Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) is the peak representative body for trade unions in Queensland, Australia. It is affiliated with the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) and the headquarters are located in Brisbane. The QCU's management consists of a committee and an executive made up of representatives from affiliated unions. The QCU's history is linked to the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and the broader Australian labour movement. It was established in 1885 but disbanded in 1889, transferring its functions to the newly formed Australian Labor Federation (ALF). The QCU reformed in 1902 but dissolved again in 1911 when its delegates joined the ALF. After the ALF dissolved in 1914, the QCU's responsibilities were divided among several labour organisations. In 1922, following the First World War, 46 unions came together to re-establish the Queensland Trades and Labour Council, now known as the QCU.
