History

Greg Weir is a Queensland-based political activist and former employee of the the Australian Labor Party (ALP). In 1976 Weir graduated as a trainee teacher and was denied employment by the Queensland Department of Education because he was a spokesperson for a gay student group he started while studying. This sparked a nationwide campaign which was supported by the Australian Union of Students. In the early 1980s, Weir was employed in the office of the ALP Senator George Georges and was later in employed in the office of the ALP Senator Bryan Burns. He was influential in the peace and anti-nuclear movements of the time and played a role in the development of HIV/AIDS awareness groups. Weir was one of the central organisers of the campaign for gay law reform which culminated in the decriminalisation of male homosexuality in 1990.
