He worked in shearing sheds before moving to Toowoomba where he studied performing and visual arts at the Darling Downs Institute. He worked briefly as an actor at the Black Theatre in Redfern and a musician, eventually forming his own country folk band, Old Dog Soup. Bob spent most his adult life in Brisbane and Toowoomba. He was the CEO of Foundation for Aboriginal and Islander Research Action (FAIRA) from 1980 to 1994, and played a major role in establishing the Tent City in Musgrave Park and other demonstrations around the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
