Biographical history

Allan Truscott was born in Emmaville New South Wales on 18 June 1903. He was the eldest son of Sidney Austin Truscott, an immigrant from England, and Julia Gertrude, from Warwick, Queensland. With his family, Truscott moved to Queensland, living in Texas and Jandowae. He worked as a wireless operator for Amalgamated Wireless from 1924-1929 and served on various vessels in the Australian Mercantile Marine during that time. During World War II, he served in the Australian Infantry battalion and later as a RAAF wireless instructor. After the war, Truscott married Meta Hurley and settled in the Brisbane suburb of Ashgrove. He worked for the Queensland Housing Commission. They had three children (Stephen Austin, James Francis and Maria Therese).

Scope and content

Album 2
Black-and-white and colour photographs of Truscott and his family, friends and travels. The photographs range from Truscott's childhood (from approximately 1910) to his funeral in 1989. These photographs were loose at the time of acquisition and have been rehoused in an archival photograph album sized 33 x 29 cm. The photographs are arranged in approximate chronological order by the processing archivist.

Box 8
Item 3
Black-and-white photographs in a commercially produced photograph album sized 23 x 29 cm. The album was bound with string or studs which are now missing (the album has been placed in a mylar sleeve by the processing archivist). It contains 24 pages of brown cardboard and the photographs are adhered to the cardboard with glue or self-adhesive photo corners. Each photograph is captioned in white by Truscott. Captions in black ink appear to have been added at a later date by Truscott's wife, Meta Frances Truscott. The captions date the photographs between approximately 1919 and 1924. The album contains photographs of Truscott and his family and friends in Emmaville NSW and Texas QLD. It also contains photographs of Truscott's travels on the SS Arafura, SS Tarcoola and SS Orvieto. Destinations of these trips include Victoria, Western Australia, northern Queensland, Thursday Island, Papua New Guinea, Borneo, the Philippines, Japan, Egypt and England. A souvenir postcard and menu from the SS Arafura is loose inside the photograph album's front cover.
