Biographical history

Gaynor Alma Cardew was a Canberra-based printmaker, sculptor and cartoonist, who signed her work ‘Gaynor’. She was born in 1952 in Clermont, Central West Queensland and graduated from the Canberra School of Art in 1977. Her cartoons appeared in a range of publications, including union and feminist publications, newspapers and government documents. Several volumes of her own cartoons were also published. She died in 1999, aged 47.

Administrative history

The Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical and Services Union (AMACSU) trades as the Australian Services Union (ASU). The union exists to defend and advance the rights of its members by protecting their rights at work and achieving better wages and conditions. The union is an amalgamation of several Australian unions and formed as the AMACSU in 1993 (but has been trading as ASU since 1991). In 1991, the Municipal Officers' Association, the Australian Transport Officers' Federation and the Technical Services Guild of Australia amalgamated to form the Australian Municipal, Transport, Energy, Water, Ports, Community & Information Services Union (which traded as the ASU). In 1992, the Australian Social Welfare Union, the West Australian Railway Officers Association and the Australian Shipping and Travel Officers Association amalgamated with the ASU. In 1993, the Federated Clerks' Union and the Federated Municipal and Shire Council Employees Union amalgamated with the ASU, creating the union in its present form, as AMACSU. In 2024, the AMACSU's estimated membership is 135000.

This series is comprised of original drafts and photocopies of cartoons from the cartoonist Gaynor Alma Cardew. These cartoons were commissioned by the Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical and Services Union under the former name of Municipal Officers' Association of Australia (MOA) and the trading name of Australian Services Union (ASU).

Thirty-five original Gaynor cartoons. Black ink on white A3 paper, one cartoon per page. Thirty of the cartoons are signed by Gaynor. Undated. Some of the cartoons are used in ASU and MOA publications from 1991 to 1993.
