Administrative history
The Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical and Services Union (AMACSU) trades as the Australian Services Union (ASU). The union exists to defend and advance the rights of its members by protecting their rights at work and achieving better wages and conditions. The union is an amalgamation of several Australian unions and formed as the AMACSU in 1993 (but has been trading as ASU since 1991). In 1991, the Municipal Officers' Association, the Australian Transport Officers' Federation and the Technical Services Guild of Australia amalgamated to form the Australian Municipal, Transport, Energy, Water, Ports, Community & Information Services Union (which traded as the ASU). In 1992, the Australian Social Welfare Union, the West Australian Railway Officers Association and the Australian Shipping and Travel Officers Association amalgamated with the ASU. In 1993, the Federated Clerks' Union and the Federated Municipal and Shire Council Employees Union amalgamated with the ASU, creating the union in its present form, as AMACSU. In 2024, the AMACSU's estimated membership is 135000.
