History

Formed from the Australian Association of Social Workers, which had been in existence since 1955, the Australian Social Welfare Union came into being in 1976. By 1992, the 6,500 members Australian Social Welfare Union amalgamated into the Australian Municipal Transport Energy Water Ports Community & Information Services Union (trading under the name of Australian Services Union). In 1993 the Australian Services Union amalgamated with other unions to become the Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical and Services Union (still trading under the name of Australian Services Union). Members of the Australian Social Welfare Union now form the Social and Community Services Sector Industry Division of the Australian Municipal, Administrative, Clerical and Services Union
