Biographical history

Graeme John Thiedeke was born on 8 January 1942. He commenced part-time study towards a Diploma of Architecture in 1960 at the Central Technical College (now Queensland University of Technology) while working at Conrad Gargett. He graduated in 1966, moved to Canada and in 1968 moved to Mexcio. In Mexico he studied art, formed an architectural practice and started a ceramics factory. In 1975 he returned to Australia, recommencing work with Conrad Gargett until 1977. In 1978 he joined the Davis Heather Group, later forming a separate company with Bill Heather, The Heater Thiedeke Group. Thiedeke moved to Malaysia in 2000 and began working for the architectural firm McKerrell Lynch.

In 1890 HW Atkinson founded the firm which has been known successively as: HW Atkinson (1890-1907); HW Atkinson & Chas McLay (1907-1917); HW Atkinson & AH Conrad (1917-1939); AH Conrad & TBF Gargett (1939-1965); Conrad, Gargett & Partners (1965-1972); Conrad, Gargett & Partners Pty Ltd (1972-1982); Conrad & Gargett Pty Ltd (1982-2004); and from 2004 as Conrad Gargett.

The architectural work of the firm includes Trades Hall, McWhirter and Son, Craigston Apartments, the Courier Mail Building, and the Empire (later St. James) Theatre in Albert Street.
