Biographical history

Alan Lawson is Emeritus Professor at the School of Communication and Arts at the University of Queensland where he previously held positions including Dean of Postgraduate Students and Director of the Graduate School and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and International). As a literary scholar, he has written on Patrick White, Barbara Baynton and Henry Lawson and was a major proponent of Australian Literature as a field of study in the 1970s, where he worked with Laurie Hergenhan to introduce courses on different genres of Australian fiction.

Series B consists of correspondence with writers including Thea Astley, Bruce Dawe, Dorothy Green, David Marr, Frank Moorhouse, Janet Tuner Hospital dating from 1979 to 1997. Includes one folder relating to Helen Darville dating from 1995 to 1997.

Correspondence with Thea Astley from 1982 to 1983. Includes three handwritten letters. Correspondence with Bruce Dawe from 1979 to 1984. Includes three handwritten letters from Bruce Dawe and two typescript copies of letters from Alan Lawson to Bruce Dawe. Original folder retained.

Folder 2
Correspondence with Dorothy Green from 1981 to 1986. Includes six handwritten letters. Dorothy was Lawson’s Masters of Arts supervisor at Australian National university from 1971 to 1972. Original folder retained.

Folder 3
Correspondence with David Marr from 1986 to 1994. Includes eleven handwritten and typescript letters and two handwritten postcards. Original folder retained.

Folder 4
Correspondence with Frank Moorhouse from 1978 to 1995. Includes typescript copy of ‘Boozing with Hawke : a short story’ by Frank Moorhouse, and correspondence and papers relating to chain letters. Original folder retained.

Folder 5
Written on cover of folder: 'The 'D' file - Confidential'. Contains correspondence, newspaper cuttings, to do with Helen Demidenko Darville, 1995-1997.

Folder 6
Correspondence with Janette Turner Hospital from 1988 to 1990. Includes four handwritten and typescript letters. Also includes a typescript invitation to a honouring Australian writers at the Australian Pavilion during the World Exhibition in Brisbane in 1988. Jane Turner Hospital’s new novel Charades was launched at this event.
