Biographical history

Gerard Lee, award-winning scriptwriter and author, was born in 1951 in Melbourne. He lived for many years in Brisbane where he completed his BA at the University of Queensland. He was trained as a journalist and schoolteacher, and now divides his time between writing and filmmaking. He is the author of Manual for a Garden Mechanic (1976), Pieces for a Glass Piano (1978), True Love and How to Get It (1981), and Troppo Man (1990). In 1989, he was co-winner with Jane Campion of the AFI Award for best original screenplay for the film Sweetie, and the duo went on to create the series Top of the Lake (2013) and Top of the Lake: China Girl (2017). Lee now lives in Sydney.
