Administrative history
The Australian Federation of University Women Queensland was established in 1920 to promote the advancement of women worldwide and their equality of opportunity through initiatives in education, friendship and peace. It became part of the Australian Federation of University Women following the establishment of that organisation in 1922. It is affiliated with the International Federation of University Women. In 2009 the organisation changed its name to Graduate Women Qld. to recognise the change in membership criteria to include graduates from all institutions of higher education.

The International Federation of University Women was founded in 1919 to promote peace and advance women's' education. The XVth Triennial conference of the International Federation of University Women was held in Brisbane in 1965. The name of the organisation was changed to Graduate Women International in 2015.
