Photocopied drafts and notes for 'The life of Thomas Lowah' (Eded mer (My life))

Two copies of the photocopied typescripts and handwritten pages that are drafts and / or notes that relate to the autobiography of Thomas Lowah titled Eded mer (My life), published by Rams Skull Press in 1988.

The first section of typescript leaves is titled 'The life of Thomas Lowah' and has has 76 leaves. The next section, a typescript photocopy is thirty six leaves in length with a handwritten note 'second time' on the first page. The third section is a copy of the preamble of the 'Constitution and Rules of the Torres Strait Islanders and Aborigines Ex-Servicemens Corporation', two leaves. The next section is a photocopy of thirteen handwritten leaves. The last section is a photocopy of five typescript pages with the first page having the heading 'Trip to Brisbane and South East Qld on TSLI Committee's Matters', with agenda and notes from meetings in February 1983.

Mostly typescript, some handwritten, some photocopies or duplicated papers. These papers were collected by John P. Brown, Senior Lecturer in Dentistry at the Turbot Street Dental School, around the formation of Aboriginal and Islander Community Health Service. It includes: rosters and roster correspondence, articles on the Aboriginal and Islander Community Health Service, dental health, finance and equipment, constitution, minutes and reports, health statistics. Papers relate particularly to the Dental Service of the Aborigines and Islanders Community Health Service.

Album, 32 x 28 x 5 cm, of ninety-two (92) black and white photographs presented to William James Gall of the official trips by James Stopford. The photographs feature James Stopford and William James Gall, as well as others possibly during the period from 1923 to 1928. Stopford was Home Secretary in the Queensland Government from 1923 to 1929. Gall worked as under-secretary for home affairs and protector of Aborigines from 1913 until possibly 1926.

Includes photographs of: Stopford Home for Aboriginal Girls at Barambah Aboriginal Settlement (now Cherbourg); Yhurri Gurri ceremonial arch at Barambah Aboriginal Settlement, 3-May-1928; Cherbourg Hospital; Cobbo Williams play acting with Mr Stopford at Cherbourg Aboriginal Settlement ca. 1925; a resident of Barambah giving a speech to welcome the members of the parliamentary party at the opening of the Stopford Home for Aboriginal Girls (The bandsmen, left to right, are Eddie Gilbert, Freddy Martin and Jimmy Dodd); the G-AUER air plane, called Hermes; photographs of a mine; and many unidentified Aboriginal and Torres Straits islander peoples.

Only the last six photographs have notations indicating that the photographs were taken by/belonged to E.W. Dabelstein. The album has the title embossed on the cover with the photographs pasted, generally two per page, onto the leaves which are made of green mid-weight card. There are some panorama photographs which have been folded to fit in the album.

'Mer vocab' written on cover of book. Handwritten A to Z list of Meriam Mir words with their English translation. Written in a Signal Exercise Book. Inserted into book: two leaves (leaves have been torn) with Meriam Mir words; one leaf inserted with a poem - the title is in English 'The cat and the rat', the poem is in Meriam Mir.

Mer - Grammar

'Mer - Grammar' written on cover of book. Handwritten in Meriam Mir. Written in a Signal Exercise Book. Back cover has come away and middle pages have come away from staples. Some water damage to bottom left-hand side of book. Twenty three loose pages inserted, many with handwritten Meriam Mir language, in pencil or pen, and some double sided. Inserted is also a playscript, handwritten in pencil on 12 leaves (some have writing on reverse), in Meriam Mir language (5 leaves) and English (7 leaves) and tells the story of a Barber in Bagdad.
