Account of the recruit of labourers in 1880, in the Gilbert and Solomon Island groups for Fiji.
The author took passage as a government agent on the Rose cutter, and twice on the Jessie Kelly schooner, to supervise the welfare of the recruited labourers on board. He described the islands in the Solomon and Gilbert Group, the Lord Howe Group, the way of life of the islanders and how and where the labourers were recruited. The captain of the Rose was Captain Tom Moore, a plantation owner in Fiji. The captain of the Jessie Kelly was Captain Robert B. Brown of Sydney.
