Leyshon house at West Chermside

Kevin and Betty Leyshon's house was designed by Dan Kelvey and was situated at 29 Rossett Street, West Chermside, Brisbane. Kelvey designed a home to fit the climate of Brisbane, built of materials that were readily available, wide overhangs or eaves, downpiping set into the building without being conspicuous, fairly flat roof without many angles and no tiles, concrete floor construction, interiors with natural materials. The file has correspondence, financial details and specifications relating to the land and house. Included is a two page note by Kev Leyshon about Dan Kelvey. There are three architectural drawings. There is an undated drawing of Residence for K. Leshion [sic] Esq at Rosset [sic] St. Chermside by D.W. Kelvey with elevations, sections, foundation plan, floor plan and kitchen details. There is a copy of this drawing with pencil notes. The third drawing is dated Mar 1965 for Proposed car-port extension for Mr. K. Leyshon at Rossett Street Chermside with Brisbane City Council specification attached and architect name not specified.

Leyshon house at Burpengary

The series contains documents and architectural drawings relating to Kevin and Betty Leyshon's house at Hunt Street, Burpengary designed by Noel Robinson (as part of 'Noel Robinson + ptnrs' and later as 'Noël Robinson Built Environments Pty Ltd). There is a file with correspondence with the Caboolture Shire Council, financial information, contracts, design notes, and photocopies of plans. There are also 2 spiralbound copies of the specifications, with divergent handwritten notes and marks on each, and a prospectus for ‘Noel Robinson Built Environments Pty Ltd’, dated post 1981. Of the architectural drawings, six plans are for the original build of the house at Hunt Street: Job no. 1105 'Leyshon House Burpengary’: ‘Plans elevations’, drawing no. 1, Aug 1974; ‘Section details', drawing no. 2, Aug 1974; ‘Details kitchen utility’, drawing no. 3; ’Details bathroom’, drawing no. 4; ‘Dormitory details', drawing no. 5, Mar 1975; ‘Storage shed and chicken coop’, drawing no. 6, May 76. There are two architectural drawings for job no. 1229, ‘House extensions’: ‘Schematic’ dated Feb 1978, drawing no. 1; and “Working drawings’, drawing no. 2, Mar 78. Four of the architectural drawings are for extensions, designed by Noel Robinson Built Environments, for K.R. & B.A. Leyshon, 'House extensions', no job or drawing numbers, dated Dec 1984 to Jun 1985. Two different sets of plans for the billiard room seem to have been drawn up, one portrayed as a curved room on the end of the existing house, one as a free-standing geodesic dome.
There are six plans in A3 size, with no date or job number, titled ‘Leyshon House Burpengary’: ‘Site plan’, drawing no. 001; ‘Existing ground floor plan’, drawing no. 002; ‘Tiling and paving layout’, drawing no. 003; ‘New ground floor plan’, drawing no. 010; ‘First floor plan’, drawing no. 011; ‘Kitchen plan and sections’, drawing no. 012; ‘Kitchen sections’, drawing no. 013.

There are two photocopies of plans for the Leyshon House by James Architects, no dates, which appears to be interior design improvements for the house. Unsure if this work was done. There is no related correspondence.

Lecture notes and research on landscape architecture

Folders 6-10
Typed and handwritten lecture notes and papers on topics including an introduction to landscape architecture; the history of landscape architecture; garden designs from around the world (China, Persia, France, England, Japan, Holland, Spain, Italy); elements of landscape design; botany; plant care; an ecological approach to landscape architecture; flowering times of plants common in Brisbane; and Australian plant life. The lectures were created and collected by Malcolm Bunzli during his career as the originator then coordinator and lecturer of the Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture course at the Queensland Institute of Technology (now known as the Queensland University of Technology or QUT). Many of the lecture notes are accompanied by hand-drawn designs and diagrams in pen and pencil, many colour. One pamphlet and various research articles and magazine cuttings, both originals and photocopies, are interspersed among the papers and were likely used as reference materials as some contain handwritten pen annotations. Most papers are undated but were probably compiled between 1966 to 1970; some are dated 1968 and 1969. Also included is some typed correspondence and typed and handwritten exam papers relating to Malcolm's appointment as an examiner for the Landscape Design (Architecture II) subject as part of the University of Queensland Annual Examinations between 1967 and 1969.

Folder 11
Malcolm's handwritten notes and collected course materials from his studies for the Diploma in Landscape Design course at Durham University, dated from 1961 to 1963, and possibly used by Malcolm as reference material when planning the landscape architecture graduate course in Queensland.
