Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters

Correspondence, reports, ephemera, and articles have been collected around the areas of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters: culture and cultural events; education; politics; rights; welfare; and SEMP (Social Education Materials Project).

Ephemeral material, partial articles and reports, photocopied material, and newspaper cuttings held in the Culture and cultural folder include:

  • Photocopied typescript of the lecture given by HC Coombs, Aboriginal Australians 1967-1976 : a decade of progress?, at the third Walter Murdoch Lecture delivered at Murdoch University on 19 October 1976, 27 leaves; with a with compliments slip from HC Coombs attached.

Personal documents

Included in this series: autobiographical and biographical material, which includes the film Shadow sister; an address book; a diary; personal financial information; material by or relating to her sons, Denis and Vivian; notebook with rhyming words; notebooks with Aboriginal words; and unidentified material, most with Kath's' handwriting.

'Unpublished playscripts and stories'

The original folder had two titles 'Unpublished playscripts and stories'. Some scripts have multiple copies, some have drafts, and some have annotations. It contains the following scripts: 'Bora. Initiation' (3 drafts), 'Civilised savages: one act play', 'Old Mick' (3 drafts, one incomplete), 'Playabout corroboree', 'Tail of platypus' (3 drafts), 'Tea party. Review.' (2 drafts), and 'You can't trust no one no how'. The last item is a photocopied typescript (8 leaves) with 'Tape excerpt (verbatim)' written across the top of every page. The 'interviewee' is an Australian Aboriginal giving a commentary on the 'Police' ; 'What is an Aboriginal?'; and 'Discrimination'.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are warned that this resource mentions cultural ceremony and Bora initiation. It may contain images, transcripts or names of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples now deceased. It may also contain historically and culturally sensitive words, terms, and descriptions.

The original folder had the title 'Unpublished poems and stories, copies only, for America'. It contains a list of stories and poems (2 copies) with handwritten details for Kath Walker. The poems: ‘Blue Crane’, ‘Mangrove Bird’, ‘Minjerriba’, ‘Butcher Bird’, ‘Moongalba Peacocks’, ‘Credit and Loss’, ‘The Golden Voice’, ‘Oration’, ‘On Trugganner’, ‘Papua New Guinea’, ‘Bluff Mountain’, ‘Little Bean’, ‘Hari Sastra’, ‘Iban Longhouse’, ‘Yussef (Hi-jacker)’, ‘Commonplace’, ‘Exile’, ‘Grey Gum’, and ‘Sister Poet’. An extra poem, not on the list is included: 'Son of a son of mine'.
