Notes: The Group was formed in December 1969 by members of the University of Queensland Labor Club. It was most active in 1970 and 1971 on the issues of Vietnam, conscription and apartheid. It was based on the University of Queensland campus.

Biographical history

Brian John Costar, born 13 January 1950, began his association with the University of Queensland in the late 1960s and from 1969 was a member of the New Left Group, a campus organisation which campaigned against the Vietnam war, conscription and apartheid. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970, a Master of Arts (Qual) in 1973, and a PhD in 1981 from the University of Queensland. He has since held academic positions at University Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, Chisholm Institute of Technology, Monash University and Swinburne University of Technology, where he was appointed the inaugural Chair in Victorian State Parliamentary Democracy in 2005.
