Scope and content
A copy of a petition written by a collection of concerned Council members, demanding a dissolution of the Council and an impartial inquiry be conducted into Tribal Council affairs. The petition posits that Council leadership had misappropriated Council funds, enacted decisions that were not permitted by the Council’s constitution, and carried out a meeting on 16th September 1971 that was uncharacteristically formal and was intended to stifle dissenting opinions and during which members are alleged to have used threatening and inflammatory language. In addition to the Council’s dissolution and investigation, the petition demands that no grants or funding are made to the Council or any of the groups associated with it. The letter is undated and unsigned, but refers to events throughout 1971.
