Biographical history
Born in England, Babette Stephens joined the Brisbane Repertory Theatre in 1930. It was under her leadership that the company acquired its first permanent premises and performing space, and constructed the first La Boite theatre. The La Boite after which the company is now named is the second, built in the early 1970s. Her biography is entitled Never Upstaged, by Jay McKee.

Babette Stephens talks with Rodney Lumer and Marguerit Millis and about her life and work. The Fryer Library arranged the interviews which were conducted in the Language Laboratory at the University of Queensland. Tape 1 was recorded 12 Mar 1991, Tape 2 was recorded 2 Apr 1991.
