History

Sallyanne Atkinson is best know as the first woman to serve as Lord Mayor of Brisbane, during the years 1985-91. This period including the World Expo, which took place in Brisbane in 1988 and used a site along the south bank of the Brisbane River which was afterwards redeveloped into a large public park and recreation space. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1993, and has also received the Australian Sports Medal and the Centenary Medal.
