Gill, George Brockwell, 1858-1954

George Brockwell Gill was born in London and completed his architectural training in England before emigrating to Australia in 1886 and settling in Ipswich. He began working with the architect Samuel Shenton, and took over his practice when Shenton retired in 1889. Gill was elected an Associate of the Queensland Institute of Architects in 1904 and a Fellow by 1913. He was the Institute's vice-president in 1914-16 and president in 1918-19. His works in Ipswich include: the Cribb and Foote department store (1911), the City View Hotel (1908), and the Solders' Memorial Hall (1922). Gill retired in 1943 and he arranged for AH Conrad and TBF Gargett to take over his office. Gill died on 1 June 1954.

Stanley, Francis Drummond Greville, 1839-1897

Francis Stanley was born on 1 January 1839 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied and practiced architecture in Edinburgh. He emigrated to Australia, arriving in Brisbane in 1862. Stanley was Colonial Architect for the Queensland Government from 1873 to 1881. During his employment he continued to private commissions. Among his designs are: Brisbane General Post Office, Roma Street Railway Station, Supreme Court of Queensland, the Queensland Club, Tighnabruaich at Indooroopilly, and St Ann's Industrial School (now part of All Hallow's School). He died on @8 May 1897.

Bunzli, Malcolm

Malcolm Bunzli was born in Brisbane in 1933. He graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Queensland in 1959. He worked as an architect for the Commonwealth Works Department in Brisbane before moving to England, where he continued his career in architecture and studied for a Post Graduate Diploma in Landscape Design at Durham University. It was the only full-time landscape architecture course in the British Commonwealth of Nations at the time. While in England he married his wife, Dorothy Bunzli, with whom he had a daughter and two sons.

Malcolm returned to Australia in 1965, briefly worked as an architect and landscape designer at Conrad Gargett, then became the first Landscape Architect in the Queensland State Government. He was responsible for setting up and overseeing the Landscape Section in the State Works Department. While in this role he spearheaded efforts to secure official recognition for the professional designation 'Landscape Architect' across all government sectors in the state and advocated for salary scales equivalent to those of architects. Malcolm played a key role in establishing then coordinating and teaching the postgraduate landscape architecture course at the then Queensland Institute of Technology (now the Queensland University of Technology or QUT). Malcolm was a foundation member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and served as National President from 1973 to 1975. He retired from active landscape architecture practice in 1993.

Catherine Elizabeth Ferguson, also spelt as Katharine, was born on 18 Jan 1875. She married John George McGregor on 28 November 1898. She died 25 April 1968.

Katharine Elizabeth McGregor was born on 16 May 1903 in South Brisbane. Educated at Brisbane Girl's Grammar School, and won an open scholarship to University of Queensland (B.A. 1923; M.A. 1925). She was the first female barrister to be admitted to the Supreme Court of Queensland. She died on 25 June 1979. After a donation from several friends, in 1980 a postgraduate scholarship and prize was set up at the University of Queensland for introductory Greek or Latin. It is now known as The Katharine McGregor Prize for Introductory Latin or Greek.

Neville Thomas Bonner AO (28 March 1922 - 5 February 1999), elder of the Jagera people, was the first Indigenous Australian to become a member of the Parliament of Australia. He served as President of the One People of Australia League (OPAL) from 1970 to 1974.
