Biographical history

Novelist, poet and literary critic John Harwood was born in 1946 in Hobart, Tasmania, to poet Gwen Harwood and linguist Frank William (Bill) Harwood. He married his first wife, Jeanie Deprose, in 1966. Harwood attended the University of Tasmania, as well as Cambridge University on a scholarship, then worked as Head of the School of English and Drama at Flinders University, Adelaide. He married his second wife, Robin F. Haines, in 1986. He left the post at Flinders University in 1997 to focus on writing. In 2005, Harwood's debut novel was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Award and won the International Horror Guild Award for Best First Novel.

Twelve letters, handwritten and typescript; eight postcards; and three cards. Some of the people mentioned include: Rachel and Toby Harwood, John Harwood’s children; various colleagues and literary friends of Gwen Harwood; Omar Pound, son of Ezra Pound and grandson of Olivia Shakespear, the latter of whom John Harwood was writing a biography from 1985 to 1986; Robin F. Haines, John Harwood's partner, then wife, from 1986; Mary, Chris and Peter Harwood, John Harwood's siblings; Warwick Gould and Deirdre Toomey, his close friends in London, both Yeats scholars; Humphrey Carpenter, a British biographer and radio broadcaster whom John and Robin visited in Oxford; Peter Goldsworthy, Australian writer and medical practitioner, and his wife Helen; Anne Jennings, Gwen Harwood's close friend; Vikram Seth, Indian author, scholar, singer, musician and close friend of Gwen who visited John Harwood and Robin Haines. Gwen's children often addressed her as ‘Moth’, short for 'Mother'.
