This theatre was part of the Birch Carroll and Coyle chain of theatres established between 1925-1935 throughout regional Queensland to sell Hollywood films to regional audiences. The "Tropical Theatre Concept" was associated with the Wintergardens, which was designed to combat summer monsoon conditions, with improved ventilation, comfortable seating and the use of interior fern gardens as part of the Wintergarden theme. The regional venues were closely modelled on the Brisbane Wintergarden, ushers were uniformed and formally trained to offer their patrons a superior service. Theatres were located in Ipswich, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Townsville, Ayr, Dalby (destroyed by fire in 1931) and Maryborough.
