Graduate of University of Queensland (B. Arch 1978). Worked with Alexander (Ian) Ferrier from 1978-1979, then Bligh Jessup Bretnall and later Conrad Gargett (1979-1981) where she was involved with the restoration of the Queensland Parliament House in the Brisbane CBD. The heritage work encouraged Gardiner to pursue conservation and she left Brisbane to study in the United Kingdom at the University of York. She returned to Australia in 1981, and worked with Richard Allom and Peter Marquis-Kyle on the conservation plan for Brisbane’s Old Museum Building and with Ian Sinnamon on the conservation of the Glengallan Homestead. In 1990, Fiona returned to the Public Works Department in the Historic Building section where she develops heritage legislation and consults on the management significant heritage sites.
