Rollo Petrie was born on 27 February 1910, the son of Walter Rollo Petrie and Marjorie (nee Seccombe). He was the grandson of Thomas (Tom) Petrie (1831-1910) and the great-grandson of Brisbane builder Andrew Petrie (1798-1872). On 15 January 1934 he married Jess Murray Kyle Little. Rollo Petrie grew up on Fraser Island. In 1996 he published his memoir Early days on Fraser Island 1913-1922. He died in 1997.

John Sinclair was born on 13 May 1939 at Maryborough, Queensland. He received a Diploma of Agriculture at the Queensland Agricultural College (now the Gatton campus of the University of Queensland). In 1974 he completed his Bachelor of Economics degree at the University of Queensland and a Diploma in Continuing Education from the University of New England in 1980. Some of the organisation he has been involved with include the Maryborough Field Naturalists' Club, Gympie Field Naturalists' Club, Wildlife Preservation Society, and he was president of the Fraser Island Defence Organisation (FIDO) when it formed in 1971.

Newspaper cuttings, correspondence, typescripts, brochures and flyers collected by Keith Prokop in the course of his PhD research into the environmental preservation of Fraser Island. A large part of the collection relates to the formation of the Fraser Island Defence Organization. There is also general material on conservation, both in Queensland and internationally. Includes the manuscript of an autobiography by Rollo Petrie with an account of his childhood on Fraser Island.
