Administrative history
The University of Queensland Bushwalk Club (UQBWC), also known as Uck-buck, formed in 1950 after the dissolution of the Science Students Association in the same year. The aims and goals of the club: to encourage people not familiar with the bush to experience it; to develop and encourage the spread of knowledge and good practice in bushwalking; to serve as a meeting place and forum for walkers of all levels and experience; and to extend peoples experiences beyond track. Initially the club was permitted to build a stone hut in the saddle between East and West peaks of Mt Barney but with more people visiting Mt. Barney the hut was demolished in the mid-seventies. The clubs magazine was called Heybob, with a smaller issue called Mini-heybob. 'Heybob' was the clubs alternative call to 'Cooee' when calling to fellow bushwalkers.
UQBWC worked closely with the Brisbane Bushwalking Club (BBWC) which formed in 1948, two years prior to the UQBWC. Many members of the UQBWC were also members of the BBWC. From these two clubs, the Brisbane Rock Climbing Club (BRCC) was formed in 1965. In 1975, the University of Queensland (UQ) formed its own rock climbing club called the UQ Rock Climbers Club (UQRCC). In 2007, the UQRCC changed their name to the UQ Mountain Club (UQMC). The UQBWC disbanded in 1997. At this time, many members were active members of the UQRCC, now called the UQMC.
