Administrative history
University of Queensland Union (1911- ).
Objectives - To facilitate communication between students and University administration and to act as a body representative of all students, to manage student facilities, to produce a student newspaper.
Publicists - Refer to the Annual Report or the annual Orientation Handbook.
Notes: The current form of the Union dates from 1948. A number of committees of the Union have been involved in political issues, eg Education Standing Committee, Social Action Committee. The University of Queensland Union was first mooted in 1911. It was not until 1921 however that competing student representative bodies coalesced to form the union. Except for brief periods, most notably the 1940s, late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the union has largely avoided broad political issues. Instead the union has mainly functioned as an administrative body initiating extra-curricular student activities such as sporting activities.

Scope and content
During a nation-wide anti-conscription campaign by the National Union of Australian University Students (NUAUS), about 40 University of Queensland students planned to march in support of this initiative. The demonstrators attempted to march from the university campus along the footpath to Brisbane's city centre. Police prevented the protestors from marching along the footpath forcing their return to campus. The students subsequently decided to drive to the city by car in order to continue their anti-conscription protest in central Brisbane. The demonstration was broken up by police and 27 people were arrested (a majority of the demonstrators). The following year, several of those arrested went to jail rather than pay their fines.
