Biographical history
Methodist chaplain Reverend Alfred Avery Mills was born in Bendigo, Victoria in 1877. He enlisted with the Chaplains Department of the AIF on 1 March 1916 and was given the rank of Captain. He was attached to the 41st Battalion which served at Armentieres, Messines, Ypres, and Passchendaele. He was awarded the Military Cross on 1 January 1918 and was gassed later that year. He returned to Australia in 1919 and continued his ministry in Queensland. Reverend Mills received the Jubilee Medal in 1935 and died in 1963.
