Biographical history
Richard Daintree was born in Huntingdon, England in 1832, the son of a prosperous farmer. He was educated at Bedford Grammar School and Christ's College, Cambridge He came to Australia in 1852 and in February 1854 joined the Geological Survey of Victoria In 1856 he returned to England for six months and studied chemistry, assaying and photography. He returned to Australia and the Geological Survey of Victoria in 1857. In 1864, he moved to Maryvale in the Upper Burdekin in Queensland and began a number of exploratory and prospecting trips In 1868, Daintree was appointed Government Geologist for North Queensland. In 1871, he returned to England and became Queensland Agent-General in 1872. He retired from the position in 1876 and died in 1878.

Eight notebooks (four written in ink and four in pencil) and six photographs. Field notes of surveys in north Queensland, with some geological observations. Areas: Lyndhurst to Oak Park stations; Lyndhurst - Cave Creek; Murray's Creek, Tommy's Creek, Specimen Gully, Golden Gully; Cape River traverses; Mt. Ramsay - Cape River, Duck Creek, Nigger Creek, Oxley Creek, Mt. Cook, Rannes,; Gympie goldfields, coal in the Dawson Valley, Woogaroo coal mine, N.S.W.; Ravenswood, Burdekin reef.
