Biographical history

Gwen Harwood is one of Australia's best-known poets. She was born in Brisbane in 1920 and lived there until her marriage in 1945, when she moved to Hobart, Tasmania. Harwood's poetry and critical writing appeared regularly in Australian literary journals from the 1960s. She published eight books of poetry. In 1989 she was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to literature. She wrote under the names of Francis Geyer, Walter Lehmann, Miriam Stone and T.F. Kline. She died in 1995.

A collection of approximately 80 letters, greeting cards, postcards, poems, photographs, newspaper clippings and notes from Gwen Harwood to Alison Hoddinott and W. G. (Bill) Hoddinott. The letters are handwritten and in typescript. They provide information about the literary and academic activities of the Harwoods, particularly the publication of The lion’s bride and include manuscript poems. They also cover many aspects of Gwen Harwood's daily life, particularly farming on the family’s Kettering property. Includes three letters from Peter Bennie to Gwen Harwood, attached to letters from Gwen Harwood to Alison Hoddinott. Letters are maintained in the folders created and titled by Alison Hoddinott.
