Biographical history

Edna Rose Chamberlain, Emeritus Professor of Social Work at the University of Queensland, studied and worked extensively in Australia and North America. Born in Brisbane in 1921, Professor Chamberlain studied Social Work at Melbourne University, graduating in 1945, and at the University of Chicago, from 1961 to1963. Her association with the University of Queensland began with an appointment as a research assistant in 1959. She became Head of the Department of Social Work in 1973 and Professor in 1974. Between 1975 and 1976, and 1983 and 1986, she was Dean of the Faculty of Social Work. Throughout her career she contributed nationally and internationally to the development of social work education and practice, particularly through participation in national and international conferences. During the 1970s she was a member of the Australian Social Welfare Commission, the Commonwealth Legal Aid Commission and was involved with the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of New South Wales. Professor Chamberlain retired in 1986, was awarded the Order of Australia in 1988, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Queensland in 1995.
