Biographical history
Angelo Vasta was born in Innisfail, Queensland, on 8 January 1941. He graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1964, moved to Brisbane in 1967, and was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1968. He became a Queen's Counsel in 1980 and Chief Crown prosecutor in 1981, and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1984. He became the first superior court judge from an Italian background to be appointed in Queensland, and only the second one in Australia. He became embroiled in the Fitzgerald Inquiry after being mentioned in evidence of the disgraced Police Commissioner Terry Lewis. He was removed from office by Parliament in 1989 after a Commission of Inquiry set up by the then-state government of Mike Ahern accused him of tax shams and unbecoming conduct. He died on 29 September 2021, aged 80.
