Biographical history

Peter Fitzallan MacDonald, generally known as P.F., was born on 4 September 1830 at Campbelltown, NSW and educated at King’s School, Parramatta. He moved to the Canoona goldfields in Queensland in 1857 and took part in a number of pastoral explorations in the area. In 1860, he settled down at Yaamba Station, near Rockhampton to develop his various lease holdings. In 1861, he was involved in the armed reprisals against Aboriginal people in retaliation for the Cullin-la-ringo massacre, a pivotal moment in the Frontier wars in Queensland. Macdonald had sold Cullinlaringo to Horatio Wills, who was killed in the massacre, the year previously.
Macdonald was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Blackall in 1873. He held the seat until 1878 when criticism of to his long-running lawsuit against the Crown (the Great Northern Run Case 1869-1880) led him to decide not to recontest.
