Biographical history

Doctor Helen Maud (or Maude) Row, née Whiddon, was an Australian medical practitioner who graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1933. She was the first female general practitioner to practice in rural communities in the 1930s and 1940s. From 1936 to 1938, Doctor Row momentarily lived and worked in London, England, while her husband, Doctor Peter Row, also a medical graduate of the University of Sydney, completed his postgraduate studies. She undertook special work in the Infants' Hospital in Westminster. Upon returning to Australia, Doctor Row was a valued member of the Manildra/Molong community in New South Wales. She provided public classes, was appointed an honorary medical staff member of the Molong District Hospital and served as the treasurer of the Manildra Progress Association until 1945 when she returned to Brisbane. In 1949, Doctor Row was appointed as a medical officer in the Brisbane Psychiatry Clinic. From 1948 to 1952, Doctor Row was the state president of the Queensland Mothercraft Association (founded by Lady Cilento). In 2022 the University of Queensland established a scholarship for females studying a Doctor of Medicine in rural areas to commemorate the contribution of Doctor Row.
