Biographical history

Sydney Fancourt McDonald was born in Brisbane in 1885. He was educated at Brisbane Boys Grammar School and the University of Melbourne. He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) in 1914 while undertaking residencies at hospitals in London and was mentioned in despatches for his work as an anaesthetist and radiographer. He returned to Brisbane after the war and became widely recognised for his work in clinical paediatrics both as a doctor and lecturer. From 1939-1945, he served in the RAAF as a Group Captain and Consulting Physician. He was a foundation fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the first paediatrician within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland. McDonald died in 1947.
