Administrative history
The Gallery was established in 1895 as the Queensland National Art Gallery, initially located in the old Town Hall building in Queen Street, Brisbane. In December 1905 the Gallery was relocated to George Street. The former Exhibition Building Concert Hall at Gregory Terrace was remodelled during 1929-30 to house the Gallery, which reopened there in 1931. Construction of the South Bank building began in March 1977 and the new Queensland Art Gallery was opened in 1982. The Gallery of Modern Art, which opened in December 2006, complements the Queensland Art Gallery building, situated at Kurilpa Point only 150 metres from the Queensland Art Gallery building, the Gallery of Modern Art focuses on the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The Gallery's flagship project is the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art series of exhibitions, which has led to the establishment of the Australian Centre of Asia-Pacific Art (ACAPA)
