History
The United Nations is an international body founded in 1945, in the wake of World War Two, which aims to maintain security, peace and cooperation among countries, as well as provide humanitarian aid, protect human rights, uphold international law and promote sustainable development. Between April and June in 1945, representatives of 50 countries gathered at the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco, California, to draft, then ratify, the United Nations Charter (or UN Charter). This Charter built on its predecessor, the Declaration by United Nations, or the United Nations Declaration. Four months later on 24 October 1945, the United Nations officially began.
