History

Located in Albert Square, between Adelaide and Ann Streets, Brisbane, the theatre opened in April 1915. It was designed by Henry White in an Art Nouveau style in two parts: the Tivoli Main, the lower and larger auditorium, and the Roof Garden, which had a removable ceiling and walls. It survived several renovations and downturns in theatre activity. In 1955 CinemaScope was installed in both theatres, but in 1963 the building was sold to the Brisbane City Council, and closed in 1965 as the area was redeveloped into King George Square. The opening season for the theatre was presented by Harry Rickard's Tivoli Theatres and featured 44 performers including: Jack Cannot, Isabelle D'Armond, Alfredo, Jack Haskell & Mademoiselle Clero. Other notable performers were: Vaude & Verne, Billy Kinkaid, the Rochezs Monkeys. Touring companies included J.C. Williamson, Philip Lytton, the Kings Dramatic Company, William Anderson Premier Dramatic Company, Vaudeville de Luxe. The Roof Garden theatre held more intimate performances including: "Signaller Tom Skeyhill's Gallipoli War Lecture Season".
