History

Brian Sweeney was born in Gympie, Queensland in 1925. He served in the RAAF from 1944 to 1945. He was a proprietor of his family’s soft drink company and was the Federal President of the Australian Soft Drink Manufacturers Association from 1954 to 1956. Sweeney was chairman of the Twelfth Night Theatre from 1971 to 1974. He was on the Committee of Review of the ABC from 1979 to 1981, the Inquiry into Opera Music Theatre in 1980, the Australia Council from 1975 to 1977. He was chairman of the Theatre Board from 1977 to 1981. Sweeney was also a member of the Queensland Turf Club. He was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael & St. George in 1982 for his services to the arts.
