Robert Archibald Ranking joined the Queensland Civil Service in 1874 and until his death on 13 June 1912, he worked as a Police Magistrate in Queensland where he was held in high regard for his handling of the Shearer's Strike in 1891, for producing a much needed 'Queensland Police Code and Justices' Manual of Crime Law' (1905), and for his honesty, knowledge of the law and humanity.
