History
Doris Pilkington's Aboriginal name is Nugi Garimara. She was born in 1937; her birth was unregistered but the Western Australian Department of Native Affairs later issued her date of birth as 1 July 1937. She was born "on traditional birthing round under a wintamarra tree" on Balfour Downs Station in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia. As a toddler she was removed by authorities and, with her sister and mother sent, to Moore River Native Settlement. Doris left the mission system as a qualified nursing aide. She married a man named Pilkington, and raised a family. She went on to study journalism and worked in film and television production. In 2002, she was appointed Co-Patron of State and Federal Sorry Day Committee's Journal of Healing; in 2004, she was named a Western Australian State Living Treasure; in 2008 she was the recipient of the Red Ochre Award of outstanding lifelong contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts. She died on 10 April 2014 at Perth. -- Excerpted from AustLit
