History

One of Australia's foremost gardening experts, Harry Oakman was the director of Brisbane City Council's Department of Parks from 1946 to 1963. During this time he was responsible for extensive tree planting programs across the city and for the design and revitatization of many parks, including the Brisbane Botanical Gardens and New Farm Park. In 1963, he became Director of Landscape Architecture for the city of Canberra and had a major impact on the development of Australia's capital. He retired to Brisbane in 1973 and died there in 2002.
