History

New State For North Queensland Movement (1955-196?).
Objectives - To create a new northern state by legal separation from Queensland.
Publicists - C. Beames, W.J. Chapman, J. Feldt, A.D. Hooper, P. Kidd, F. Rossiter, W.H. Simms, L.E. Williams.
Notes: The Movement was connected with similar movements in Central Queensland (Capricornia New State Movement) and New England (New South Wales) and with the Federal Reform Association. The movemen presented petitions in parliament (1957) but a 1959 meeting with Premier Nicklin to discuss the new state proposal was abortive. Agitation for new states dates back to the 1870's and continues today.
