History

The Multicultural Development Association (MDA) was formed in 1997 following the defunding of the Brisbane Migrant Resource Centre. Gail Hyslop was one of its founding members. Incorporated in 1998, the MDA began as a three-year Multicultural Advocacy Project funded by the Queensland Government. In 1999, the MDA launched the Migrant Service Agency, providing settlement services to independent migrants under the government's Community Settlement Scheme. In 2002, the organisation expanded to include employment and training services for migrants and refugees. By 2006, the MDA was recognised as one of Queensland's largest migrant and refugee support service providers. In 2019, the MDA changed its name to Multicultural Australia.
