Born Barbara Joyce Russell. Pastor, psychologist, journalist and teacher based in Cairns, Queensland. An advocate of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples since the 1970s. Played a key role in helping the Aboriginal people of Mapoon return to their land in 1974 after their forced removal by the mining industry. Was married to Indigenous activist, Mick Miller, from 1978 to 1987. They had one son together named Michael. After the marriage ended, Barbara married Indigenous artist Munganbana Norman Miller. In the early 1990s, Miller, as CEO of the Aboriginal Coordinating Council, lobbied governments and authored reports on crime prevention and Aboriginal deaths in custody.
