Marie McFarlane was a member of the Australian Postal and Telecommunication Union from 1974 until 1988 and for many years one of the union's shop stewards. In 1978 she was elected inaugural secretary of the Working Women's Charter Committee of the Trades and Labor Council of Queensland, a position she held until 1987. After changing jobs in 1988 she joined the Australian Telecommunications Employees' Association/Australian Telephone and Phonogram Officers' Association where she was again active as a shop steward. In addition to her trade union work McFarlane was involved in a number of political causes and leftwing organisations.
