History
Margaret Elizabeth Lawrie (née Hayes) was born in Victoria in 1917. Married Ellis Lawrie in 11 May 1939. Worked as a teacher. Had an interest in the cultures, history and languages of Torres Strait Islander peoples. Travelled to the Torres Strait with Aboriginal poet Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker) frequently between 1964 and 1973 to conduct research into Torres Strait Islander peoples. The research resulted in two publications: Myths and legends of the Torres Strait (1970) and Tales from Torres Strait (1972).
