History

Raymond Evenor Lawler was born in Footscray, Victoria on 23 May 1921. Lawler left school at 13 to work in a factory, attending evening acting classes and at 19 wrote his first play. He is best known for his 1953 work Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, which is regarded as changing the direction of Australian drama. The Doll was Lawler's tenth play and formed part of the The Doll Trilogy alongside The Kid Stakes (1975) and Other Times (1976). He was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1980 and the Order of Australia (OA) in 2023. He died on 24 July 2024.
