History
Florence Elizabeth James-Wallace was born in Saint Lawrence, Queensland. The family moved to South Brisbane 1901 and James-Wallace trained as a nurse. She enlisted as a nursing sister on 26 Apr 1915 and served in No 3, Australian General Hospital, Australian Army Medical Corps, during the Egyptian and Turkish campaigns of World War I. She later served in England. James-Wallace returned to Australian on 23 Jan 1919 and was discharged on 23 May 1919. Her time in the War left her with the pain of rheumatism and arthritis for the remainder of her life. James-Wallace was allocated Portion 97 of the Waterworks Road Soldier Settlement in the Parish of Enoggera. In 1923 she moved to Auckland, New Zealand to work. She married in 1927 and she and her husband, Harry Oswald "Ossie" Mellsop, visited Brisbane several times to see her siblings. On one visit James-Wallace left her photograph collection and war diary remnants with her family. She died in 1970 at Auckland.
