Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters

Correspondence, reports, ephemera, and articles have been collected around the areas of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters: culture and cultural events; education; politics; rights; welfare; and SEMP (Social Education Materials Project).

This file consists of three items:

  1. A Collins Australian Diary for 1959 with 11 pages of newspaper cuttings regarding Kath Walker's activities in promoting Aboriginal rights (rest of diary is empty) from 1961 - 1972.
  2. A photograph album (half full) of newspaper cuttings regarding Kath Walker's activities in promoting Aboriginal rights, with one article about her son Vivian Walker (1971). Articles are either dated 1966 or 1971
  3. One photograph album with six pages of newspaper cuttings regarding Oodgeroo's activities in promoting Aboriginal rights, 1961 - 1967

Includes playscripts, mostly performed by Student / Brisbane New Theatre, New Theatre, Unity Theatre; as well as playscripts, skits, and sketches by Jim Crawford.

Research material, drafts and proofs for her book 'Defiance: political theatre in Brisbane 1930-1962' (2000).

Personal papers of Murray Norris, notebooks of Ursula Southwell, and papers concerning George Eaton, Jim Crawford and other prominent figures in labour movement and radical culture circles. Oral history recordings, photographs and other research material relating to the Young Communist League, Eureka Youth League, leftwing bookshops in Brisbane and leftwing political activism. An appeal to world opinion.

A letter addressed to U Thant, Secretary-General of the United Nations, from the Northern Territory Council for Aboriginal Rights. It addresses the issue of lesser citizenship for the "Aborigines of the Northern Territory" as enshrined in the Australian Constitution, and the effects of this treatment on the Aboriginal people. The appeal is made "under the clause of the United Nations Charter which says no people should be discriminated against because of their race or colour", and is signed by Davis Daniels, Secretary. A paragraph on the back page states: "Authorised by Mrs. K. Walker, Queensland Secretary, Federal Council for Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders (FCCA), and Secretary, Queensland Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders".

National petition towards equal citizenship for Aborigines

Blank petition form requesting Section 127 and the discriminatory words in Section 51 be removed from the Constitution by the holding of a referendum "at an early date". At foot of leaflet: "Authorised by Mr. Stan Davey, general secretary for the Federal Council for Aboriginal Advancement, on behalf of 34 affiliated organisations from all Australian States and Northern Territory ... petition to be returned by February 28th, 1963."

Petition for a referendum to remove discrimination against Aborigines from the federal constitution

Four page leaflet issued by the Federal Council for Aboriginal Advancement detailing Section 51 and Section 127 of the Australian Constitution, the reasons why these sections need to be changed, the rights of Aboriginal people on settlements and reserves in five states and the Northern Territory, list of organisations affiliated to the Federal Council. One the last page: "Authorised by Mr. Stan Davey, General Secretary for Federal Council for Aboriginal Advancement". Undated.

Allegations of racism & prejudice practised by Townsville police against coloured folks of that city.

The first page contains an account of police interactions with members of the indigenous community on the night of New Year's Eve [1971] and early morning of New Year's Day [1972], detailing allegations of racism and prejudice on the part of the police in these interactions. The two remaining pages comprise a letter to the proprietor of the Terminus Hotel detailing a "prima facie case of racial discrimination", with the lack of reply to this noted on the second page.
